The Importance of Doll Play for Toddlers

Our little ones love playing with dolls!
Little Gate Blue Gators (one year old class) are playing with dolls and learning important social emotional, cognitive, and language skills while doing so. Children learn to care for themselves and others as they attend to the baby’s needs. They learn to care for their bodies as they wash and change dolls. Doll play allows the children to talk about caring for others and ways that we can show others that we love them. The Gators have discussed caring gestures, like hugs, holding hands, waving hello, and offering a comforting pat on the back when friends are upset or scared. The experiences they’ve encountered while playing with dolls has created countless opportunities to put those conversations into action. Kind and caring behavior has been demonstrated and teachers have noticed an increase in language skills as the children “pretend play.”
