The Reggio Emilia philosophy extols the powerful concept of the environment as the third teacher. Visitors to our campus observe the attention to detail, the beauty of our buildings, the carefully selected materials, and the strategic setting and surroundings in each classroom or space. Joyful learning is a top priority at Little Gate and our environment must evoke inspiration and inquiry.
Little Gate is housed in beautiful spaces near the Butterfly Garden, playground and green spaces that are designed with our children learning in mind. Our homelike environment is thoughtfully structured so that children experience a very comfortable transition from their homes into their first school experience. Classrooms are side-by-side and children can skip down the hallway to the kitchen to grab extra fruit for snack time. Learning centers have been thoughtfully placed under windows so light enhances the experience and in comfortable nooks when a cozy feeling is more desired.
Documentation fills the halls and classroom walls to share “classroom stories” and to make our learning visible to all. Photos of children working and playing are carefully placed around the classrooms so they know that their work is valuable and important to their teachers and their peers. Light and shadow explorations are set up in shaded nooks for children to feel the mystery and wonder of such play. Child sized tables with comfortable seating and materials are chosen very carefully to support social interaction, problem solving, dramatic play, and conflict resolution. Beautiful photographs of celebrated spaces and experiences are located in our construction areas to spark a child’s curiosity as well as to inspire and challenge our youngest students.
