Louise S. McGehee School's Little Gate is very excited about our Community Art Outreach Program. At Little Gate we have become inspired by many aspects of the Reggio Emilia approach. One aspect particular to this philosophy is creating a bond between school and community. Our faculty met to discuss how we can best initiate a link or a bond with our local community. We decided that our Little Gaters create so many wonderful art pieces that we could display them in storefronts, restaurants and other areas in the community that would like their spaces "enhanced."
A group of teachers collaborated to create goals to ensure this project would be meaningful to our students and community. First is to spark conversations, questions, and dialogue in our community regarding some of our youngest citizens, the Little Gate artists. Second is to create bonds with shopkeepers, business owners and artisans in our NOLA community. These bonds may lead to relationships that can enhance both our school community and the outside community. And third is for our Little Gate artists to feel pride and importance in their creations. There are many "languages" of a young child - expression through different art mediums are some of the most powerful.

We started this community art outreach in June 2011 on Magazine Street. Since then we are excited to share the news that our pieces are in many shops and restaurants around the city. We hope that these pieces inspire you and create dialogue with your family, friends, and fellow citizens.
