As a follow-up from our story last week, the Ducks were finally able to test out their Shrinking Machine! Before the activity the class met on the rug and were asked two questions:
- What do you think will happen when we try out our Machine?
- What do we need to do?
Here are a few responses:
Jack: It's going to shrink
Henry: It's going to make us tiny (hold fingers up to show us how tiny)
Jack: It's going to make us this tiny (Points to the bottom numbers on the yard stick) and now let's go!
Jadyn: Let's go, let's go!
The children are anxious to go, so we grab our yard stick and flashlights and head over to the tree. They brought it outside and placed it next to a tree and took turns climbing in and flipping the switch to turn it on. They measured themselves with a yard stick before they got in and then re-measured after they each had a turn. Unfortunately, the machine did not work as planned.
Ms Michelle: (opens the door) Are you a little smaller?
Jack: No, we are still big.
Bizzie: I want to get in now. I want to get in.
Sophia brings over the yard stick and we measure, just to double check that they have not shrunk.
Ms Michelle: I think Henry is an inch smaller. Do you feel smaller? Henry vigorously shakes his head no and Jack reassuringly puts his hand on Henry's shoulder and yells "NO!"
Ms Michelle measures Jack and states that he is an inch smaller too.
Jack: No
Ms. Michelle: Let me measure again, just to make sure.
All is silent while Jack is re-measured.
Ms. Michelle: Oh, Jack, you're right you are the same size. You didn't shrink.
Jack: Yea! Maybe it needs more energy
Jadyn: Maybe that wasn't such a good idea
Now the Ducks have begun to brainstorm reasons why it is not working and will continue to do so in the upcoming weeks.
