In November, our Duckies were very interested in building a machine with the intention of shrinking people. This is one of the theories that arose during our many conversations about how to enter the hole in the tree. We gathered some information during circle time on what the children wanted machine to look like (shapes and colors), materials and tools we will use to build it, and how it will be used. Some suggestions were for the machine to have some triangles, circles, and squares on it. Pink and blue seemed to be the two most popular colors and that it will have switches, buttons, and sticks to make it work.
In December, the children began working by sanding down our machine, some even used the electric sander. They also built several models of machines and had a great time taking apart an old computer and an old record player!! The Ducks have put your tools, washers, wall anchors, and other various "treasures" to good use and they have certainly helped with the building of our "machine."
Our shrinking machine is progressing nicely since we have returned from Winter Break. The children have painted it in various shades of gold and silver and have helped us attach all kinds of gadgets and various hardware. It even has lights that can be turned off and on!! Soon we will be testing the children's theory of whether or not the machine will truly shrink us! We will let you know how it goes!!
